MUCH, MANY & A LOT OF

MUCH & MANY

We use MUCH and MANY to express a large quantity. Much and many are mainly used in negative sentences and questions. However, they can be used in affirmative sentences when there is a formal context.

  • Much: we use it with uncountable nouns.   (mucho/a)
    • I don’t have much time.
    • Have you got much money?
  • Many: we use it for plural countable nouns.    (muchos/as)
    • Has she got many friends?
    • There are not many apples in the basket. / There aren't many apples ...
A LOT OF (LOTS OF)

They can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns, although lots of is more informal. We use a lot of or lots of in affirmative sentences.
